 FUNDAMENTAL ASPIRATIONS AND CURRENTS OF IDEAS

1. The aspiration to equality and the aspiration to participation, two forms of man's dignity and freedom.

2. Legislation is necessary, but it is not sufficient for setting up true relationships of justice and equity.

3. Only a deep feeling of respect for and service to others can lead to charity, preferential respect for the
poor, and solidarity.

4. The aspirations of equality and participation through search, and not ideology, promotes a democratic type of society.

5. Political activity should be consistent with the total vocation of humankind.

6. Both Marxist and Liberal ideologies go against Christian faith and concept of man and woman.

7. Social ideology, whether theoretical or active strategy, can alienate human beings, and is incompatible with the Christian faith.

8.  There is the danger that people’s desire to serve can be consumed by an ideology which, even if it suggests certain paths to liberation, ends up by making man/woman a slave.

9. Ideological teachings remain always the same. However, historical movements, while originating from these teachings, can be subjected to changes. Historical movements can contain positive elements.

10. Certain features of socialism are attractive, but Christians must critique their appeal in the light of faith.

11. There are several interpretations of Marxism, but historically it has led to totalitarianism and violence.

12.  Liberation promotes economic efficiency but distorts human nature.

13. Christians need to carefully discern these different ideologies in the light of their faith and Church teachings.

14. Bureaucratic socialism, technocratic capitalism and authoritarian democracy have not solved the great human problem of living together in justice and equality.

15. Humans have become objects of science, that lacks a total picture of humanity. Christians need to enter into a dialogue.
